THE WRONG VIEW

Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do the people say that I am?” And after hearing the response of his disciples, he later asked his disciples the question directly to understand who they believed him to be. Jesus asked this question because he was about to promote his disciples to the position of power in his kingdom. But for his disciples to effectively fulfill their office, they will need to have complete confidence in their king.

It was important for the disciples to know who Jesus was, because he, Jesus was God’s promised Messiah who was to come into the world. And to have an incorrect view concerning Jesus would have placed his disciples at a disadvantage because of their approach and lack of authority because of their view of him.

Now, if the disciples of Jesus were going to treat him as just another prophet, a simple man, and not look at Jesus as their Messiah. When the time comes for them to administer the policies of God upon the kingdoms of the world and taking charge of the spiritual kingdom of darkness that’s forcing its authority upon the kingdoms of the world. They will fail at best because of their lack of confidence in the authority of Jesus Christ, and the authority he had confirmed on them.

The prophets came prophesying before the arrival of Jesus, and like Jesus raised the dead. But unlike Jesus, they died like ordinary men. Sent by God, they served kings and nations, but they weren’t the ultimate savior, and because they weren’t but prophets sent to proclaim the coming of the Messiah, they died in the hope of the resurrection.

Nonetheless, what the disciples of Jesus weren’t aware of, was that unlike the prophets, Jesus was no ordinary man, he was both God and Savior, the prophesied Messiah. And because he was no ordinary man, Jesus came that we might believe; and that we might obtain eternal life and the promise of his kingdom.

Therefore, standing among his disciples and asking the question “Who do men say that I am? Jesus wanted his disciples to possess the right attitude toward him. This would have given his disciples the confidence they need to stand firm in the leadership and authority he gave them, the renewed inheritance of God for his people to have dominion over his kingdom.

The people say he was “One of the prophets” But when he asked the disciples, “Who do you say that I am” Peter replied, “The Son of the living God” And in response, Jesus said to Peter, “Upon this rock, I’ll build my Church” Because knowing who Jesus is, is to take on the confidence that God has given us which is the authority to rule and reign in his kingdom.

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
