Now speaking with the Church in Thyatira, Jesus made the promise revealing the reward he has for the churches upon his return that should the churches turn its life around and began to embrace those standing for his word and his kingdom refusing to bow the knee to the practice of the Nicolaitans, and the practice of persecuting those standing in holiness that he would cause them to rule with Him over the nations.
God had revealed he is angry with the Church and the angels of the churches for being passive, and if something was not done to address the problem within the churches, He will use the Church in Sardis as an example so that the rest of the churches in Asia will learn and know God is faithful and is a judge among his people.
Revelation 2:22-24 “Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searches the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burdens.”
The time has come for repentance, God is willing to grant his people a place on his throne that they might rule over the nations with him. Therefore, those with understanding should act quickly that they may escape the wrath of God against the enemies of his Son Jesus Christ within the churches.
Revelation 2:26-29 “And he that overcomes, and keep my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
It was clear, it was possible for each of the churches to lose their reward, and place in the kingdom upon the return of Jesus Christ. God has appointed each of his people kings and priests over the nations, that they may rule over the nations to his glory and honor.
And Paul in agreement with John, wrote to churches and warned, 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 “Know you not that they which run in a race run all, but one only receives the prize? So run, that you may obtain. And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.
I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
And turning to the Church in Sardis, John wrote on account of what the Lord had shown him, and that he might prepare the churches for the day and return of the Lord, and that they might hold their position in the kingdom of Christ.
Revelation 3:1-2 “And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou lives, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.”
The Church in Sardis was living a life of compromise among the cults of Rome and becoming comfortable with the Nicolaitans, and the practices of Jezebel, thought through works of charity, and traditional gatherings they were spiritually alive, and that God was pleased with their works.
Through compromise, they preached the gospel of Jesus Christ, but on the other hand, they were sitting at the table of the enemy eating meats sacrificed unto idols to the weakening and destruction of the saints. While on the other hand, they were sitting at the Lord’s table to honor his passing and sacrifice for their sins as they look for the hope of his return. But God sent John to warn the Church to save those that are ready to die because those who thought they were alive in Christ were dead.
Revelation 3:3, “Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.”
It was time for the Church to remember what they were taught and how they were at the beginning zealous unto death and without compromise for the gospel of Christ under the leadership of the apostles who gave their lives for the gospel that they may save many.
Nevertheless, there were a few things left God was pleased with, there were some among the Church in Sardis who had kept themselves worthy and had not compromised the gospel or their lives to go after the lust of the world; therefore, Jesus said through John.
Revelation 3:4-5 “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments, and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcomes, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”
The churches in Asia were undergoing tremendous persecution, and facing these types of threats, many were breaking under the pressure of Rome and the cults that were creeping into the churches. Therefore, seeing these things, God was reminded his Church of the reward in store for them and why they needed to hold on until the end. “he that endured until the end, even in death shall be saved”
Jesus being the first and the last was in charge of the outcome, and the promise he has made was to raise them up in the last day and to appoint them rules over the nations when he will have established his kingdom on the earth. And Paul in writing to the many churches he planted in Asia also wrote.
Romans 8:18-21 “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.”
