The Church in Philadelphia

This entry is part 6 of 8 in the series The Seven Churches

The suffering of the churches in Asia was a real issue for many believers, and facing persecution and the constant trouble for those claiming to be followers of Jesus, Jews, God through John reminded the churches he was with them, and upon his return, he will reward their faithfulness.

And writing to the Church in Philadelphia, by the Holy Spirit, and by revelation, John told the Church God has granted them power in his kingdom for their faithfulness for resisting the persecution they were facing.

Revelation 3:7-8 “And to the angel of the Church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that has the key of David, he that opened, and no man shuts; and shuts and no man opened. I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.”

And facing constant pressure to deny the authority of Christ, and to go after strange doctrines, and yet standing against the false brethren claiming to be Jews. The Church in Philadelphia kept the word of God. They remembered the teachings of Jesus who warned they would face persecution for his namesake, and that they were sheep among wolves. And most importantly, they understood they were sent on a mission to deliver God’s message to a world in rebellion.

Therefore, it was to be expected because they were members of God’s coming kingdom and will one day rule over the earth, and nations with Christ. Persecution was a part of the experience that comes with serving Jesus Christ in this current world.

For the saints in Philadelphia, Jesus was not only a man, he was the descendant of David the king. Jesus said to the Church in Philadelphia, “I am he who has the key of David” Meaning, he is the king over all the earth, and because of this reality, the Church in Philadelphia withstood the persecution with a sound mind.

As a result of their faithfulness, Jesus the one who has the key of David, the authority to sit on the throne of David, and will in the future establish his eternal kingdom. Told the Church in Philadelphia he has given the Church the authority to reign in his kingdom. Therefore, he has set before them an open door, whatever they bind on earth will be bound in heaven.

Matthew 18:18-19 “Truly, I say unto you, whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. And again, I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my authority, there am I in the midst of them.”

This was the reward for the Church in Philadelphia on account of their loyalty to Jesus Christ. And soon God will cause them to subdue their enemies and those troubling his Church. Revelation 3:9-11Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

And because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man takes thy crown.”

It was important they hold on to their confidence in Jesus Christ, and to remember there is a reward in store for them, that they are serving their king who will reward his people when he will have established his kingdom.

Jesus through his death and resurrection has conquered the grave, he has made way for the establishment of his eternal kingdom in fulfillment of the words of the prophets by the word of God. Luke 1:31-33 “Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom, there shall be no end.”

And while the world is in rebellion, and are working at establishing a kingdom without God, the Church has been sent out to warn and teach the world that they might surrender their lives to God and his king Jesus, for the day is at hand when God will surely judge the kings of the world who are in rebellion against the son of God.

Therefore, let him with understanding stand firm that no one takes his crown, said John, according to the vision that was shown to him by Jesus Christ. Revelation 3:12-13Him that overcomes will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: And I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
