The King’s Dream

This entry is part 4 of 7 in the series The First Voice

While in Babylon, and exiled on account of the rebellion of his people, Daniel had the opportunity along with some of his closest friends to serve in the king’s palace. He was exiled in the third year of King Jehoiakim king of Judah.

Now King Nebuchadnezzar wanted the most skilled men to serve in his palace from the lands he had conquered, and Daniel being among the chiefly families of Jerusalem was selected along with his friends to serve the king.

And while Daniel and his friends were promoted to a high office in the king’s palace and service, king Nebuchadnezzar got a dream, and during this time, Daniel almost lost his life along with the magicians who served the king because they were unable to interpret the dream. However, like John who was exiled on the Island of Patmos and received God’s vision concerning the future, Daniel beforehand had received the dream of the king along with its interpretation.

Daniel 2:1-6 “And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar; Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So, they came and stood before the king.

And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live forever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.

The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, the thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor: therefore, shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.”

This was a serious challenge, but Daniel knew God and consulting the Lord of heaven, God revealed the future and dream to Daniel who interpreted the king’s dream. However, because they dealt in falsehood to direct the king, the magicians, and wise men told the king no man can do what he has asked.

Daniel 2:10-11 “The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. And it is a rare thing that the king required, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”

This, however, has made the king angry, nevertheless, God was using this opportunity to expose the falsehood of the magicians and to glorify his name among the people and within the most powerful of nations on the earth. This was God’s way of promoting his people, therefore, God blessed Daniel and promoted him to a place of honor as he will do in his coming kingdom.

Daniel 2:16-23Then Daniel went in and desired of the king that he would give him time and that he would shew the king the interpretation. Then Daniel went to his house and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision.

Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And He changes the times and the seasons: he removes kings, and sets up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know to understand: He reveals the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

I thank thee and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.”

And like Daniel who had received his vision, John also received the vision God showed to Daniel concerning the times and the seasons, and God’s appointed judgment in each of the seven empires to have risen upon the earth. God had revealed to John and the seven churches the seals, appointed times for judgments. And that Jesus was the King and judge over all the nations through the breaking of the seals.

And because he is coming to establish his kingdom and to destroy the kingdoms of the world, and the remnants of them, God sent his people out into teh world to proclaim the gospel of his coming kingdom, so that the world may surrender and be saved from the penalty and God’s wrath against the opposing kingdoms of this world. Because the kingdom of God will be a great mountain over all the nations on earth.
